Steve Kerr spoke to ESPN recently about Kevin Durant‘s decision not to return to the Golden State Warriors. Kerr mentioned that Durant was well within his rights not to return to the franchise after years and years of being slandered for taking the easy way out by joining the Warriors and winning the NBA championship. For a player like Durant, having to go through that ordeal again is not a good idea.
“I don’t blame Kevin one bit for not wanting to rerun things here. He took so much sh*t for like, ‘Oh, you’re jumping on the bandwagon’ [when he signed with Golden State as a free agent in 2016]. And then he’s Finals MVP two years in a row. It’s like he still gets criticized. So why would he want to face all that B.S. again?”
The Golden State Warriors made an approach for Kevin Durant prior to the trade deadline, as they wanted to pair him with Stephen Curry once again. However, Durant decided not to return to the franchise, choosing to stay put with the Phoenix Suns. It was reported that Durant didn’t want to go back because of his strained relationship with Draymond Green.
Green seemingly took a shot at Durant’s feelings on the matter. It appears as though Durant will not be returning to the franchise for the foreseeable future, as there are a lot of hurt feelings on both sides. The 15-time All-Star was able to achieve the most success of his career with the Warriors, winning two NBA championships and Finals MVPs with the franchise.
However, an acrimonious exit meant that any relationship between the two sides was done for the time being. Will they ever reunite in the future? Only time will tell.
Stephen Curry: No Hard Feelings Over Kevin Durant Snub
Stephen Curry also spoke about Kevin Durant’s decision not to join the Golden State Warriors. He noted that he had conversations with Durant about potentially coming back, but respected his decision not to return to the Warriors. Neither player had any control over the matter, but Curry didn’t try to influence Durant’s decision one way or another.
“You need everybody to be all bought in no matter what the history you have. And I respect KD. It’s all about having peace of mind and happiness. Neither one of us controlled that [trade] situation. It’s just you want to make sure somebody wants to be somewhere. Other than that, I’m not trying to convince anybody to be somewhere they don’t want to be.”
Curry recently spoke in another interview about the Warriors trying to recruit LeBron James and Kevin Durant over the last few weeks. He noted that while he doesn’t know what the future holds for all three players, he enjoyed his time with them at the 2024 Paris Olympics and doesn’t rule out the possibility of playing with them in the NBA.
Fans will get a glimpse of the sensational trio as teammates this Sunday, as they share the court at the 2025 NBA All-Star game. The NBA will urge players to compete at a high level, so hopefully fans get to see some high-level basketball from the star-studded group in San Francisco.
