It was on July 24, 2023, that Bronny James’ life turned upside down, as he suffered a cardiac arrest. James, fortunately, managed to recover from it, but that day is one he’ll never forget, albeit for the wrong reasons. During an interview with Men’s Health, the 20-year-old spoke about the events leading up to his cardiac arrest.

“He tells me that it just felt like a normal day. He had his smoothie and went to go to a summer workout on USC’s campus before school started and the season kicked off in earnest. Midway through running drills, he says, he blacked out, doesn’t remember anything else. He had suffered a cardiac arrest.”

It’s scary to think how quickly things can go wrong. Bronny admitted a whole host of emotions were going through his head following the attack, as it was unclear why it had occurred.

It turned out the reason was a Congenital Heart Defect which could be treated and it meant a full recovery was on the cards. Bronny then shared some details about what he did in the recovery phase.

“I got real on top of my routines to get back to where I was. I had to do breathing exercises and stuff. It was a total reset. I have to stay on top of my heart medications, and… I got my heart pillow.”

Bronny got that heart pillow because it hurt a bit when he coughed. When one holds on to it during a coughing episode, it greatly reduces the pain.

Bronny also revealed that he still hasn’t gotten back to where he was before the cardiac arrest. He stated his days aren’t normal anymore, which isn’t a surprise. It’s going to take a while before everything starts seeming normal again.

The fact that Bronny was able to get back on the court for USC just months after the incident is a testament to his perseverance. Even if his professional basketball career doesn’t turn out to be as great as he’d hoped, he is still a winner in my book.

LeBron James Reflected On Bronny James’ Cardiac Arrest

LeBron James was understandably devastated when his son suffered that cardiac arrest and is ever so grateful now to see him back on his feet. LeBron recently looked back on Bronny’s cardiac arrest.

“Shoutout to the man above. To the whole coaching staff, training staff, members of the [USC] program… They’re the reason Bronny is alive now and smiling, and thriving, and doing what any 19-year-old should be doing and that’s living out their dream. It’s crazy with kids because if they love something and they want something that’s all that matters. As a parent, you’re like ‘You had a cardiac arrest.’ In his mind, he’s like ‘Can I or can I not play basketball again? And if the answer is yes, when can I?’ I love that…”

The staff at USC deserve a lot of credit for acting quickly and ensuring that Bronny got the medical help he needed at that critical juncture. Their actions undoubtedly saved his life and he now gets to live out his dream of playing in the NBA.

Bronny’s official NBA debut now looks set to take place on Oct. 22, when the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Minnesota Timberwolves. He’d be sharing the court with LeBron and it will be a momentous occasion when they’re first out there together.
