NBA Insider: LeBron James May Request Trade After Picking Up $52.6 Million Player Option

LeBron James' decision to exercise his player option doesn't appear to be the positive sighting the Lakers were hoping for, as Shams Charania expressed the superstar's intent to play for a contender.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has been the central figure of the franchise for the better part of the last seven seasons. After opting into his $52.6 million contract extension for next season, however, the 40-year-old could be seeing his time with the Purple and Gold come to an end, as per NBA insider Shams Charania. While reporting on the situation on “SportsCenter”, Charania said:

“What we do know is he will be playing a record 23rd NBA season. Still not sure if he’s going to play one more season or if he has multiple years left in him. But I’m told he wants to compete for a championship next season, and he isn’t certain about the Lakers’ roster moving forward.”

The Lakers’ start to the offseason has been rather suspect. Although trade rumors have seen the franchise emerge as one of the more active teams in negotiations, they have remained quiet and have made virtually no trades or signings ahead of the draft.

“My understanding is that James is supportive of the Lakers’ positioning themselves around Luka Doncic, building for the future,” he continued. “Rich Paul told me this morning that the Lakers have been true partners of his and LeBron James for eight seasons while he’s been there. But he also told me, the franchise is going to do what’s best for them, they understand that they have to do what’s best long-term.”

Charania added that James would be on the lookout for the best opportunity to succeed and end his career on a high note, potentially contending for a title. While the Lakers have primed themselves to do so with their extensive efforts to strengthen their roster by filling out positions, there appears to be some doubt in James’ mind regarding this approach.

Lakers insider Trevor Lane provided a comprehensive explanation of the possibilities that stemmed from James’ decision to exercise his player option. While there is a greater likelihood that he will request a trade, it seems that this would also be dependent on the organization’s approach towards winning a championship.

The Lakers’ ongoing roster construction efforts have seen them linked to many relevant targets, primarily in the frontcourt. From bigs like Walker Kessler to wings like Andrew Wiggins, the Purple and Gold boast a lot of scope to be contenders next season. But completing these trades will be the first step in solidifying their claim on the title.

Having the 40-year-old opt in to his contract has positive implications, especially for the future. Considering that Austin Reaves will demand a massive pay rise in his contract extension next season, the Lakers would have struggled to make a relevant offer with James still on the books.

With a new veil of uncertainty falling over the upcoming season, the Lakers will hope to make the best of the given situation under the regime of new ownership.
