76ers swingman Kelly Oubre Jr. was on everyone’s mind this week after his involvement in a Philadelphia hit-and-run went public. Oubre, who suffered some minor injuries in the accident, is expected to miss time on the court as he recovers from the freak series of events. But in an update to the story on Wednesday afternoon, Philadelphia law enforcement revealed that they found no evidence that an accident took place where Oubre said it did.

According to Oubre, he was hit at the Center City intersection on Saturday night but video surveillance footage from the area casts doubt on the claim, as it fails to show any such incident occurred. While the investigation is still ongoing, suspicions have been cast on the details that Oubre Jr provided to the police.

“The Police Department currently does not have any video or photographic evidence that depicts this collision,” Sgt. Eric Gripp, a department spokesperson, said Wednesday. “We continue to work in hopes of gathering evidence and we encourage anyone who has information to reach out to our crash investigation unit.”

The timetable for Oubre’s return is still unknown at this time but he was in the middle of the best stretch of his career before going down in the crash. The 76ers, who are 8-2 on the season, were leaning on Oubre for his shooting and on-ball defense but now they’ll have to look elsewhere for that production until he heals from his injuries.

NBA Fans React To The Latest On Oubre Jr.

This whole situation has many moving variables and it’s impossible to draw any conclusions until all the details are known. But with the police being unable to corroborate Kelly’s version of events, some are speculating that he may be intentionally withholding some information on his case.

As others pointed out, however, misremembering the details of the encounter may not be that unusual for Kelly considering the circumstances in which it all played out.

In the unlikely event that he actually is lying about the encounter, fans are struggling to imagine what reason he might have for fabricating such an elaborate story.

In fairness to Oubre, the investigation is still in its early stages and it’s very possible that evidence comes out to confirm the accident as he describes it. But until the people see the proof for themselves, the rumors and whispers will rage on all throughout social media.

76ers Are On A Roll

Despite the losses of James Harden and Kelly Oubre Jr., the 76ers are having a strong start to the season. At 8-2 on the season, Philly sits first in the standings and Embiid is leading the way with a stat line of 33.1 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game on 50.5% shooting. As a top-10 defense and top-five offense, the 76ers are one of the few teams equipped to dominate on both ends of the floor. Particularly, the breakout performance of Tyrese Maxey has elevated the 76ers to one of the best in the East and they are shocking the world as the NBA’s most powerful one-two punch.

In the aftermath of the Harden trade, Philadephia got even deeper with wings like Nic Batum and fan favorite Robert Covington, who have already earned significant minutes in the rotation. For his part, Oubre was a starter alongside Maxey and Embiid, and his two-sided game made the perfect fit for what they are trying to run this season For Philly’s sake, they better hope that Oubre Jr. returns soon or they could start to lose ground in the Eastern Conference standings.
