The Dallas Mavericks caught a lucky break when the NBA rescinded Luka Doncic’s 16th technical foul of the season, helping him avoid a one-game suspension as the Mavericks look to salvage their season against the Indiana Pacers.

Many fans weren’t happy to see Doncic get special treatment in this case, but the opposing coach seemed to be on board. Rick Carlisle empathized with Doncic and openly supported his tech being rescinded.

Rick Carlisle on Luka Doncic playing tonight vs. Pacers after NBA rescinded his technical foul suspension: "He gets hit on virtually every play. I’ve seen it close up. … I’m leading the league in technical fouls for coaches, so I empathize with disagreements with officials."

Carlisle and Luka Doncic have a strong relationship from when Rick coached the Mavericks. Luka is going through the toughest stretch of his career right now, openly admitting to being unhappy with the state of things as they are right now. He had 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists in 3 quarters to help the Mavs win this game.

Will The Mavericks Make The Playoffs?

With their win over Indiana, the Mavs are now 37-39 on the season, with an outside chance of winning out their remaining games and finishing above .500. The team’s lack of defense won’t help them be competitive in the postseason, so is there any use in trying to make the playoffs for an inevitable first-round exit?

The Mavs draft pick this season is top-10 protected, so the team may be better off not making the playoffs and actually getting that pick for their own use. The roster desperately needs more defensive pieces, but the Mavs don’t have the assets to get them. They’re going to push to make it to the playoffs, but maybe they’re doing it in a year where they should stick with their draft pick instead.
