  • Ricky Rubio has played in the NBA since he was 20 years old, completing 12 seasons
  • The Cleveland Cavaliers guard announced that he is taking an indefinite break from his basketball career
  • Ricky Rubio explained that this is to take care of his mental health

Ricky Rubio has been with the Cleveland Cavaliers since 2021, but he hasn’t been much of a factor for the team. The 32-year-old Spaniard has played just 67 games in the last two seasons, being unable to stay on the court due to health issues.

Rubio has been a solid NBA player throughout his 12-year career, he has 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. But it seems that there is a lot more going on behind the scenes, as he announced his decision to take an indefinite break from basketball on Saturday.

“I have decided to stop my professional activity to take care of my mental health. I want to thank all the support I have received from the [Spanish national] team to understand my decision,” Rubio said, as reported by ESPN

“Today family makes more sense than ever. Thank you. I would ask that my privacy be respected so that I can face these moments and be able to give more information when the time is right.”

Spain is participating in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, but it seems that they will have to play without Rubio. This will be a big blow to them as he has proved time and again to be a very good point guard both in the NBA and the international game.

Ricky Rubio Has Hinted That He Doesn’t Think The NBA Is All-Important In The Past

For a lot of stars, the NBA and excelling in it becomes their life. But Ricky Rubio has never been one of those; having made his professional debut at the age of 14 in Europe, he has always been quite mature for his age. And he had hinted in the past that there are things more important to him than the NBA

“When my son starts school, the NBA will not be worth it. I will have to go back. I don’t want to make him dizzy moving around when he’s six years old, at the age of starting to make friends. It was discussed with my wife, and we have it very clear. There will come a time when basketball will not be the priority.”

Making the league and the money that comes with it is what keeps players going for as long as they can. But Ricky Rubio has done more than enough to cement his legacy. The hope is that he feels good enough to return to the game soon, though. Basketball is better when Ricky Rubio can play.
