Nate McMillan is the current head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, and his tenure with the franchise has been mixed. Though the team managed to make the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, they lost in the first round in 2022 and are currently the 9th seed in the Eastern Conference.

A recent report from Shams Charania of The Athletic revealed that Nate McMillan has “strongly considered” resigning from his head coaching position. However, his resignation does not seem to be “imminent.”

In the midst of a disappointing campaign, Atlanta Hawks head coach Nate McMillan has strongly considered resigning from his position, league sources with knowledge of the situation who are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter tell The Athletic.

McMillan’s job status came into question across the NBA after his exchange with Hawks All-NBA star Trae Young at a gameday shootaround. His job status has been considered safe, and the Hawks have wanted to finish out the season with McMillan on the sideline, sources said. But McMillan, 58, appears to be near the end of his tenure with the Hawks after the season — unless there’s a resignation before then.

Since general manager Landry Fields became the Hawks’ lead front-office executive last week, there have been only positive conversations with McMillan about the direction of the team this season, league sources said. No resignation from McMillan is imminent, sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking said.

As mentioned in the report, Trae Young and Nate McMillan had an altercation earlier this season. The performances on the court haven’t been great either this year, and perhaps parting ways could be best for everyone involved. However, it is also possible that Nate McMillan will manage to turn things around in the future.

Hawks Players Were Reportedly On Nate McMillan’s Side

There is no doubt that the altercation between Trae Young and Nate McMillan was a big deal, and many gave their takes on who was right and wrong in that scenario. A previous report suggested that the Atlanta Hawks would take Nate McMillan’s side if they had to.

Raja Bell: Is there any sense of where the team falls on this? I saw something similar with [Zach Wilson] and then he came out with the media and got really combative, and you started to see when they put Mike White in that the team didn’t really have his [Wilson’s] back. There are situations that I’ve been in where a player is stepping up and acting a way towards a coach that is kinda a reflection on the way the team feels about the coach, and there are other situations where a player will act like that and the rest of teammates are like, “Nah, we don’t fuck with that.”

Sam Amick: I think the answer’s pretty clear that the players — if they were picking sides on this — to be honest with you, they’d be on Nate’s side.

This report clearly believes that the Atlanta Hawks players would not back Trae Young in this scenario. However, not all reports are always accurate, and perhaps we’ll get more information on this situation in the future.

If the Atlanta Hawks start winning more games, then perhaps this altercation between Nate McMillan and Trae Young will only be a small blip in their season. Hopefully, that does end up being the case, and we’ll see if the Atlanta Hawks will be able to win at a high level in the future.
