Damian Lillard has been the talk of the town around the NBA after his recent huge 71-point performance. Lillard has been having the season of his life, but the Portland Trail Blazers have been unsuccessful, leading to more speculation about his future.
Speaking on the Big Podcast with Shaq recently, Shaquille O’Neal made a case for why the Blazers should trade Damian Lillard.
“The organization should do him a solid and trade him to a contender,” O’Neal said bluntly. “They should use him to get some pieces because they’re never going to win there if you don’t get him any help. But if you send him to a contender, I would do that if I was management.”
This is not the first time that someone has expressed this opinion, there have been many that have suggested that the Blazers should move Lillard on if he won’t leave himself. His greatness deserves a championship window, and the Blazers have never really been able to give him one.
All that doesn’t seem to matter to Damian Lillard himself, though, he has been open about why he has stayed in Portland. He went so far as to say that his haters should hope he never wins a championship with the Blazers. And his loyalty in a day and age where that seems to be lost should never be taken for granted.
Damian Lillard Reaffirmed His Desire To Bring An NBA Championship To The Blazers As Giannis Did For The Bucks
There have been people that have questioned Damian Lillard’s desire to win because he hasn’t left the Portland Trail Blazers. But following his monster performance, Lillard once again spoke about how he wishes to win with the team that drafted him.
“Giannis, people said he needed to leave Milwaukee, they’ve been struggling in the playoffs, they’ve been losing in the first round — all these different stuff,” Lillard said to ESPN’s Baxter Holmes. “I’m sure that championship is very, very fulfilling. I’m sure it freed him. He’s playing with a different type of peace and comfort.”
The key difference between Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo is that Giannis was much younger when these decisions were being thought about than Lillard is now. Perhaps Shaq is right, and the franchise needs to step in and do their star a solid by sending him somewhere he has a real opportunity to cement his legacy.
