Steve Kerr was honored as one of the Top 15 Coaches in NBA History in 2022, but he admits the only reason he is still the head coach of the Golden State Warriors is because of Stephen Curry.
“I thank my stars every day. Literally every day,” Kerr said. “The ability to coach Steph right from the beginning is the only reason I’m still here is because of the human being he is, not just the player and as talented as he is, but the tone that he sets for the whole group. It just makes my job so much easier.”
Kerr credited the 35-year-old for the Warriors being so stable for the last decade.
“The stability that we have here over a decade, we wouldn’t have that without Steph,” Kerr continued. “I’m lucky to coach him, lucky to watch him every day. He’s been incredible in camp. He’s 35, he’s in the best shape of anybody on the team… The guy’s incredible. We are a week into training camp, and he’s out there, 35 years old, just destroying everybody. He’s amazing.”
“I thank my stars every day, literally everyday”.
Steve Kerr credits Steph Curry to much of their success.

Kerr has indeed been quite fortunate, as there aren’t too many superstars like Curry. Not only does he make life easier on the court, but there are never any issues off of it, either. We have never heard anything about Curry making life difficult for Kerr or anyone else on the Warriors, as some superstars tend to do.
When the best player has little to no ego and brings a sense of stability to the team, it makes life easier for the head coach. Would Kerr have had success elsewhere? I believe so, but he certainly wouldn’t have won four championships or had a 473-238 record in the regular season.
Stephen Curry Shared His Favorite Steve Kerr Story
The 2023-24 season will be Kerr’s 10th as head coach of the Warriors after he arrived in 2014. He and the players have shared some incredible moments in that time, and Curry recently revealed his favorite Kerr story.
“I remember it was a game against Phoenix in 2017 or so, the players coached that game,” Curry said. “He gave us the clipboard. Obviously, you have to be winning and you’ve got to be really confident to pull a move like that.”
The game Curry was referring to was on 12 February 2018 in Golden State. Kerr took a backseat then, with the likes of Curry, Draymond Green, and Andre Iguodala coaching during timeouts. The Warriors went on to comfortably win the game 129-83. Curry also praised Kerr here for never putting himself above the players.
“A lot of coaches would be like, ‘Look at me’ kind of mode when you’re inheriting a team that was really good at first but you’ve helped elevate to a championship-type level, and he’s not like that,” Curry added. “He’s not the one that’s going to say he’s the main cause for something, even though he’s been extremely — we all know — extremely valuable to us and our success.”

We saw that in Kerr’s comments about Curry. He credited his superstar for their success and didn’t try to take credit. As the two-time MVP says, though, Kerr has played a role in their success.
The Warriors were a good but not great team when he arrived, and he helped break the shackles. He installed the motion offense that unlocked their full potential and identified that the likes of Draymond could be key contributors to their setup.
Can Curry And Kerr Win Their Fifth Title Together In 2023-24?
The Warriors won their fourth title with Curry and Kerr in 2022, but their title defense got off to a rocky start before the games even began. I’m, of course, referring to Green’s infamous punch on Jordan Poole during practice. The Warriors just weren’t the same last season as a result and were knocked out in the Conference Semifinals.
The incident caused trust issues in the locker room, and they seemed like a disjointed unit at times. With Poole now having been traded, they’ll be looking to get back on track.
In that quest, they acquired Chris Paul, and I think their season will ultimately come down to how well he fits in. They’re going to be a very good team regardless of how he plays, but if they are to win it all, he has to play well.
On paper, he solves two big issues. The Warriors’ offense struggled whenever Curry was on the bench last season, and it lacked a little bit of diversity as well. Paul can help with both those problems, but we’ll have to wait and see how things pan out on the court.
