Kevin Durant’s freak injury during warmups before the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder had Phoenix Suns fearing the worst.

There were reports that he might be out for the regular season, but that isn’t the case, as he is only expected to be out for a couple of weeks. Now, some more good news has come their way via GM James Jones.

“If the playoffs were to start today, he’d be out there,” Jones told AZ Central. “He’d be struggling a little bit.”

By the looks of it, the Suns are just erring on the side of caution here. They aren’t really in a desperate situation at the moment and can afford to have him on the sidelines until he’s fully healthy. Considering his recent injury history, it is certainly the right thing to do as well.

Durant already missed nearly two months of this NBA season with an MCL sprain, and it’s just unfortunate that three games into his return, he is again out of action. Those three games were spectacular, though, as the Suns went 3-0, with Durant averaging 26.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 3.7 APG, and 1.3 BPG while shooting 69.0% from the field. There were some doubts about how quickly he would fit in with the team, but he showed once again that he fits into any system in an instant.

NBA Analyst Listed The Major Concerns For The Suns

Still, no matter how well he has fit in, the fact is that the Suns ideally would have wanted him to play as many games as possible in order to get fully comfortable with his teammates. It is not ideal that he’d have only played a handful of games with this group leading into the postseason.

NBA analyst Michael Kaskey-Blomain also listed two other major concerns for the Suns, with the first being injuries. To go with Durant, both Devin Booker and Chris Paul have dealt with injuries this season as well. It is quite possible that one of those three could end up missing some time in the playoffs, and that is where the other problem comes in. Acquiring Duant meant the Suns sacrificed some of their depth, and they are no longer in a position where they could survive if one of their stars went down. The Suns desperately need the injury bug to stay away if they are to win it all this season.
