The Houston Rockets made their pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, selecting Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard with the third overall pick. The Rockets chose to secure one of the best shooters in this year’s draft class, and Sheppard was the best option available for them.

Sheppard proved himself to be a reliable shooter during his time with the Wildcats, where he averaged about 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks for the season. While Sheppard did not start a lot of the games he played with Kentucky, he did show that he was a reliable piece for Kentucky.

As mentioned before, Sheppard is one of the best shooters in the NBA Draft this year. He shot a whopping 52.1% from the three-point line and averaging 2.3 shots made from 4.4 shots attempted. That is just a little bit lower than his field goal percentage of 53.6%.

For the Rockets, selecting Sheppard was a smart pick, as they did lack shooting depth on their roster. Their previous young draft picks like Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun have shown solid potential, but are not good shooters, especially Green. So the Rockets used their draft pick on a great shooter.

Whether Sheppard will be part of any deal made in the coming weeks remains to be seen. But for now, he is a part of the Houston Rockets. It will be interesting to see how Ime Udoka chooses to use him this year.

Perhaps Sheppard will come off the bench in the beginning, much like he did at Kentucky, at least till he can adjust and acclimate to the NBA. But given what Sheppard showed fans at college, it won’t take him long to become a regular fixture in the NBA.
