Forward Paul George is considered the second-best player on the Los Angeles Clippers, and his skill set makes him one of the most versatile players in the entire league.

This summer, Paul George was featured in a variety of trade rumors. One of the rumors linked him to the New York Knicks, and recently, we have gotten an update on that situation. NBA insider Alan Hahn recently revealed that the Knicks backed out of the Paul George trade because it was too expensive and because they didn’t want to give George an extension.

“They had a chance to get Paul George. They said it was too expensive, they don’t want to do it. They’ve already backed outta that. They talked to the Clippers, the Clippers gave what it would cost, then Paul George said ‘But I want an extension.’ And they said ‘We’re not doing that.’ And they walked away. So Paul George…as far as now goes, it’s off the table”

Even though Paul George is a good player, it is easy to see why the Knicks backed out of the deal. He is a 33-year-old and has a lengthy injury history. George doesn’t necessarily fit the timeline of players like Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle either, and there were definitely reasons not to trade for him.

During the 2022-23 regular season with the Los Angeles Clippers, Paul George put up 23.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 5.1 APG while shooting 37.1% from 3PT range. He is still an All-Star level player, but it is unclear how long he will be able to sustain this play.

Paul George Might Not Get A New Four-Year Deal From The Clippers

Even though the Clippers elected to keep Paul George through this offseason thus far, that might not be the case by the end of next season. A recent report revealed that George might not get an extension from the Clippers.

“The biggest subplot in the NBA that not enough people are talking about is Paul George and Kawhi Leonard with the Clippers, being extension eligible. In Kawhi’s case in July. I think in Paul George’s case in September. Because I just don’t think, based on what I’ve heard, that if those guys walk in the door and ask for four-year max extensions, I don’t think the Clippers are just giving them to them.”

It remains to be seen whether Paul George will be able to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers for the long-term. It could depend on how the Clippers do this season, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
