Tim Legler, a well-respected NBA analyst and former player, recently engaged with fans in an ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on the NBA Reddit page. During this interactive session, Legler fielded numerous questions about his views on basketball, both past and present. Among the questions, two stood out for their focus on the timeless debate surrounding the greatest player of all time (GOAT) and the most clutch players in NBA history.

A fan with the username ‘AronwithoneA’ posed a direct question to Legler, asking him to name his GOAT without giving a “smartass answer.”

AronwithoneA: “Who is your GOAT? Don’t give a smartass answer.”

Tim Leger: “It’s Michael Jordan for me. I preface it with this I played in the 90s. That guy won 6 rings by playing in the 90s, and I got a sense of it playing then. LeBron is another guy, Kareem is another one.”

“There’s a level of competitiveness that Michael demonstrated every time he played. The era does matter to me too. It’s so impressive that he was able to do what he did in that era with defenses physically designed to stop and impede you.”

Legler responded unequivocally, selecting Michael Jordan as his GOAT. Legler emphasized the unique level of competitiveness that Jordan demonstrated every time he stepped on the court. He also highlighted the importance of the era in which Jordan played, noting that the 1990s were particularly challenging due to the physicality of the defenses.

Teams during that time were designed to stop and impede players like Jordan, yet he still managed to dominate and secure six championships without ever losing in the NBA Finals. Legler’s choice of Jordan as the GOAT aligns with the views of many basketball purists who value not only Jordan’s individual accolades but also his impact on the game and his unparalleled success in the most crucial moments.

Another intriguing question came from a fan with the username ‘jack_theRapper,’ who asked Legler to choose the top players he would trust to take the final shot in a high-pressure situation.

jack_theRapper: “Trailing 95-96, with 8 sec left in the game in Game 7. Coach calls a 1-4 flat for your player who catches it at the nail off the inbounds pass. Who do you want with the ball in their hands? (Top 3-5 candidates please)”

Tim Legler: “Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Larry Bird.”

Specifically, the scenario involved a game where the team was trailing by one point with eight seconds left in Game 7. The coach calls a 1-4 flat for the player who catches the ball at the nail of the inbounds pass. Legler was asked to name his top 3-5 candidates for this critical moment.

Legler’s response included some of the most legendary names in NBA history. Legler’s choices reflect a deep understanding of the game and an appreciation for players who have consistently proven their ability to rise to the occasion. These players not only possess the physical skills but also the mental toughness required to succeed when the stakes are highest.
