For much of this 2023 offseason, Tyler Herro not only found his name in trade talks but also had to see reports of the Portland Trail Blazers having absolutely no interest in acquiring him. Herro now looks set to stay with the Miami Heat and, on media day, was asked about everything that had transpired prior to it.
“I mean, I am not going to say too much,” Herro said. “I know my value. I’m just excited to hoop. For the teams that didn’t want me, that’s on you, and the teams that do want me, you’ll see why you want me.”
Herro was then asked if he looks forward to playing against the Trail Blazers after their lack of interest in him, and he didn’t mince his words.
“Yeah, it’s cool. I’m just ready to play the best,” Herro stated. “Portland ain’t the best so I’m not really worried about Portland.”

The Trail Blazers have actually put together a solid team, so I don’t think they’re necessarily going to be all that bad in 2023-24. We’ll actually have to wait for quite some time to see Herro take on the Trail Blazers, as the first meeting is on February 27th in Portland.
Why The Trail Blazers Did Not Want Tyler Herro
The Miami Heat had offered a trade package centered around Herro for Damian Lillard, but it was rejected. It’s actually pretty obvious why the Trail Blazers had no interest in the 23-year-old, and it doesn’t have anything to do with him not being a good player or anything along those lines.
They already had Shaedon Sharpe and Anfernee Simons, and then drafted Scoot Henderson with the third pick of the 2023 NBA Draft. The last thing they needed was another guard, and it made no sense to accept any trade offer that revolved around Herro.
Tyler Herro Has Been Throwing Some Shade At The Heat Too
While Herro might have been upset at the Trail Blazers for their lack of interest, it seems he certainly was annoyed that the Heat kept shopping him. He has been sending messages on social media for a while, and Herro took a shot at the Heat once again after Lillard was traded to the Bucks.
It was reported previously as well, that Herro was upset with the Heat, due to the constant trade rumors. Honestly, anyone in his position would be upset about the situation as well. It is a business at the end of the day, though, and he’ll just need to act like a proper professional once the action commences.
He might just be getting a bigger role in Miami too, as it was reported that the Heat could use Herro as the primary ball handler if the Lillard trade failed. He has shown he can be a capable playmaker, having averaged 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game last season.
Herro is also inevitably going to be relied upon more so than at any other point in his time as a member of the Heat. They have lost both Max Strus and Gabe Vincent in free agency, while Kyle Lowry has just declined a lot at this point. If the Heat are to have a successful 2023-24 season, Herro has to play at a high level.
