The Golden State Warriors fell short of winning the championship this season, and there is no doubt that this was a disappointment after the team managed to win the 2022 NBA championship.

As of right now, Klay Thompson is in the last year of his contract, which has led to much speculation about his future. Recently, Warriors owner Joe Lacob spoke to Madeline Kenney of The Mercury News and claimed that the team is optimistic they will be able to re-sign him.

“Discussions on extending Klay Thompson, who’s entering the final year of a five-year, $190 million deal, are quiet at this point, according to Lacob, though he remains optimistic that they’ll figure it out at some point.”

“’Certainly, we’d like Steph, Draymond, and Klay to retire as Warriors,’ he said. ‘That is my goal, our goal, and I think it’s a good likelihood that’ll happen.'”

It remains to be seen whether the Golden State Warriors will manage to actually retain Klay Thompson. He is a franchise legend, and it is clear that the team wants him to remain a Warrior for the rest of his career. The key is going to be the amount that he re-signs for, and if he takes a pay cut, there is no reason for the team to let him go.

This past season, Klay Thompson averaged 21.9 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 2.4 APG while shooting 41.2% from 3PT range. Though he isn’t who he used to be on the defensive end of the floor, there’s no doubt that Thompson is still an effective offensive player.

Some Believe The Warriors Shouldn’t Give Klay Thompson An Extension Now

Though it is clear that Klay Thompson is still a good player, some believe that Klay Thompson shouldn’t get an extension immediately. Previously, we saw Gilbert Arenas suggest that the Warriors should let Thompson play out the year.

“Klay, I’m not going to give him an extension,” Arenas said on the No Chill podcast. “I’m going to let him play the year out. It’s horrible, it is horrible… I want to see what his value is in the open market… It’s an a**hole move, but sometimes you just got to be the a**hole. Whatever he gets in the open market, I would be trying to match, but I want to see what the value is versus just automatically giving him an extension.”

It remains to be seen what is in Klay Thompson’s future. It is likely that he prefers to remain with the franchise rather than leaving in free agency, but a good deal from another team could be too good to pass up.
