Giannis Antetokounmpo is leading the race for MVP this season, but does it mean he’s the NBA’s best player?
According to long-time NBA analyst and insider Zach Lowe, a strong case can be made for the Greek Freak owning the honor of being basketball’s top player. Here’s what he said on Get Up!
“I hate this because it comes off as disparaging LeBron, who might be the greatest player of All-Time, having the greatest age 35-season of All-Time. But there’s just no shame in saying Giannis has been better every statistic except the two I mentioned (assists and three-point shooting). You can do all your advanced stats, all your traditional stats, Giannis is better, his team is better.
Yes, LeBron plays in the West and we can get into roster context and all that but I just think you stack them up — Giannis is having one of the greatest scoring seasons of All-Time.”
This season, Giannis is averaging 29.6 points, 13.7 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game on 54.7% shooting. The Bucks have been the NBA’s best team all season long, boasting the best record in the NBA and dominating their opponents every step of the way.
But while that may be good enough to clinch the MVP this season, Giannis will have to prove himself in the playoffs if he really wants to claim he’s the best. Because for all his statistical heroics and personal accolades, he has yet to win a ring and until he does, there will always be that big gaping hole in his resume.
It will be up to him to prove he can do it — and what better time than now?
