In the NBA, a travel is not a stat a player wants. Luckily, the travel call has been nonexistent in the modern NBA, or so it seems.

Traveling is still enforced, and these players led the league last season:

1. Giannis Antetokounmpo – 38

2. Ja Morant – 31

3. Jaylen Brown – 28

4. Zach LaVine – 26

5. Kyle Kuzma – 25

6. Klay Thompson – 24

7. Alperen Sengun – 23

8. Bam Adebayo – 23

9. Stephen Curry – 22

10. Joel Embiid – 22

Giannis Antetokounmpo committed the most travels in the league last season. This was despite playing in just 63 games during the regular season.

Even if The Greek Freak has committed 38 travels, he makes up for it with his scoring and defense, which is among the best in the NBA. Recently, Antetokounmpo trained with NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon. Maybe one thing they worked on was not traveling with the ball.

One player who is surprisingly in the top 10 is Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors. Thompson is a catch-and-shoot type of player who doesn’t put the ball on the floor a lot.

Back in 2016, in a game against the Indiana Pacers, Thompson famously scored 60 points while only dribbling the ball 11 times. So, to see Thompson had committed 24 travels last season is surprising.

Since we’ve shown which players committed the most travels in the 2022-23 season, we will now look at which teams had the most travels called against them.

Here are the top 5 teams that committed the most travels in the 2022-23 season:

1. Golden State Warriors – 127

2. Milwaukee Bucks – 120

3. Chicago Bulls – 119

4. Memphis Grizzlies – 116

5. Minnesota Timberwolves – 116

The Golden State Warriors top the list of teams that committed the most travels. With Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson in the top 10 for players who traveled the most, you can understand why.

Still, out of the top 5 teams that committed the most travels in the 2022-23 season, only the Chicago Bulls failed to reach the playoffs. The Bulls made the play-in tournament before getting knocked out by the Miami Heat.

The team that committed the least amount of travels last year was, surprisingly, the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas committed just 68 travels as a team.

This comes as a surprise, as the Mavs have ball-dominant players in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. You’d think there would be occasions where they’d dribble themselves into a travel.

If Dallas can continue to keep the travels down, maybe after a full training camp, the Doncic-Irving duo can lead the team back to the postseason. As of now, traveling is the least of the Mavs’ worries.

The Time Phil Jackson Called Out LeBron James For Traveling

Legendary former head coach Phil Jackson once called LeBron James out for traveling. Jackson made remarks about how LeBron travels yet gets away with it back in 2015.

“I watch LeBron James, for example,” Jackson said. “He might [travel] every other time he catches the basketball if he’s off the ball. He catches the ball, moves both his feet. You see it happen all the time.

“There’s no structure, there’s no discipline, there’s no ‘How do we play this game’ type of attitude. And it goes all the way through the game. To the point where now guys don’t screen—they push guys off with their hands.”

Phil Jackson might have a point. There’s been evidence of LeBron traveling, yet no call was made. Maybe this is why LeBron, who is very ball-dominant, did not make the list of top 10 players who traveled last season.

Does LeBron get away with a lot of travels? Or does he just use clever dribbling moves?

One thing we do know is LeBron will try his best not to be on the top 10 2023-24 traveling list.
