NBA fans know Gilbert Arenas as a maverick and a wildcard, a supreme NBA scorer in his prime, but someone who couldn’t exactly be trusted off the court. He made more than $160 million in NBA salary alone during his career, but his childhood was far from easy. 

Gilbert Arenas Sr., the father of Agent Zero, was a father of five and decided to move from Florida to California when Gilbert Jr. was just six years old. The story was recently shared in a long article about Arenas and his life.

Arenas’ father moved from Florida to California in search of a better life for him and his family, but it was far from easy. The article goes on to reveal how six-year-old Gilbert Jr. had to comfort his dad when things weren’t going according to plan. 

It is 1988. It is 2 a.m. His child is in the passenger seat. Gilbert Jorge Arenas is asleep. He is six. He does not know he is homeless.

“In the parking lot, Gilbert Sr. started to cry in the driver’s seat. He refused to let the tears fall in front of Little Gil. In the passenger seat, the boy touched his father’s arm. ‘What’s wrong, Daddy?’ he asked. ‘Nothing’s wrong, son.’ 

“‘It’s going to be alright, Daddy,’ said the boy. ‘It’s going to be OK.’

While the 6-year-old Gilbert Jr. could not have known exactly what he was promising, he delivered on it in style. Arenas went on to become a 3-time All-Star in the NBA and has since enjoyed an excellent media career as well. He is a millionaire and one of the most famous players in the NBA world.


Gilbert Arenas Is Providing An Incredible Lifestyle For His Children

Gilbert Arenas is now 41 years old, and he is the furthest thing from homeless. Arenas has a house in California that is over 10,000 sq. ft and has five bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, a swimming pool and is decked out with amazing artwork. His recent problems in life have more to do with the abundance of money than a lack of it.

He has two sons, Alijah and Aloni Arenas. Alijah Arenas is 16 years old and was ranked No. 5 in the 2026 class by ESPN, he could very well follow in the footsteps of his father. It’s a testament to Arenas that he has been able to provide such an incredible life for his children considering the situation he was in as a child.
