Joel Embiid will be suspended for three games, as the NBA concludes their investigation into his altercation with a reporter in the locker room this weekend. Shams Charania reported the news of Embiid’s suspension, and it is presumed that Embiid will be out longer than the length of the suspension, as he is also dealing with an injury.
This is far from the only reprimanding the Philadelphia 76ers organization has faced since the start of the season.
The 76ers were also investigated by the NBA over their reporting of Joel Embiid’s injury and availability, and forced to pay a fine of $100,000 after the NBA found that they violated the league’s injury reporting policy.
Embiid got into an altercation with a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, who had previously referenced Joel Embiid’s late brother and young son in a column while being critical of him.
He then issued a stern and scary warning to the reporter to never mention members of his family ever again, or he would have to take extreme measures and deal with the consequences.
Embiid didn’t get support from his franchise’s GM and president, who slammed his altercation with the member of the press as unacceptable.
But many believe that Embiid, while he got incredibly hostile, was in the right to bring up his issues with the columnist, who brought up his family members in a hit piece against him.
There were those within the organization who expected Embiid to return to the court this week, along with Paul George.
But with this suspension, Embiid and the 76ers will have to wait for a little bit longer to allow the former MVP to start the season. There is no word on whether the reporter will be allowed to ask questions or be present for the 76ers’ post-game scrums.
