Tennis legend Serena Williams fired some shots in LeBron James‘ direction last night. While hosting the 2024 ESPY Awards, Serena Williams brought up Bronny James‘ recent entry into the NBA. She wished Bronny success in his career and made a joke about LeBron James’ hairline receding.
“A big moment in sports this year was LeBron James’ son, Bronny… He got drafted to the Lakers where he will play with his dad. And I truly hope Bronny has a long career… So long that he will see his hairline recede, then, miraculously un-recede, like dad.”

It was clearly a cheeky dig from Serena Williams, who poked fun at LeBron’s hairline, something that fans, analysts, and even other NBA players have been doing for years. It’s unlikely James would mind at all, or take any offense to Williams’ comments.
However, later in the night, Serena would take a more pointed shot at The King. While talking with her daughter on stage, Williams pointed out that James wants to win a championship with the Lakers this year with Bronny James on the team.
She then remarked that she was able to win a grand slam while being pregnant, and claimed her accomplishment was more impressive.
“The women’s game is extremely physical… LeBron wants to win with his son on his team, I won with my daughter in my belly. I think we know which one is way more impressive.”

Once again, LeBron is unlikely to take offense to this jab from Serena. And while LeBron winning a championship with Bronny James would be an incredible accomplishment, it is hard to rival the incredible achievement of Serena Williams.
James has often shown Serena Williams a lot of love and respect. Much like James, Williams is considered one of the all-time greats in her sport. And James even suggested that she was the GOAT during her incredible performance at the 2022 U.S. Open.
LeBron James Faces Criticism For Bronny James Getting Drafted
Former NBA player Steven Hunter recently slammed LeBron James for using his power and cachet within the Lakers organization to get his son Bronny drafted. He claimed that LeBron and Rich Paul abused their power to get Bronny James a guaranteed contract, something second-round picks don’t usually get offered.
“For those that don’t know… Late second-round picks don’t get guarantees (Especially before summer league). Typically late second-round picks don’t get 4 year guaranteed roster spot deals either. This wasn’t earned I’m sorry… And it’s an egregious abuse of power from LBJ & Rich Paul.”
“It’s a slap in the face to all of the kids out there who work their asses off to get to the league. It’s sneaky Hollywood s**t like this that turns a lot of people off about LeBron… This is just another example of what they be talking about right when you try to like’em.”
While there is some criticism that can be made about Bronny’s path to the NBA, LeBron James hasn’t done anything morally wrong. Any father would want his child to have opportunities and will use their power to give them those opportunities. James wanted the best for his son and did what he felt was right to get him what he needed.
Furthermore, several players in the NBA have benefitted from some form of nepotism. While Bronny’s case might be the most high-profile, and the most extensive, he is not the only second or third-generation player to get a chance in the NBA thanks to their parent.
Bronny James will be eager to prove the critics wrong next season. While his opportunities with the Lakers will be limited, as he will spend most of his time in the G-League, he will want to show that he deserves the contract he was given by the 17-time NBA champions.
