Team USA was looking dangerous at the start of the tournament, with many pegging them or Canada to win the tournament. The two nations met in the third-place game (which Canada won) after the USA fell to a shock loss at the hands of Germany, who went on to win the Gold medal. They also lost to Lithuania in the second round.
Haliburton averaged 8.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists over the tournament. He played in every game but was primarily used off the bench behind Jalen Brunson.
Team USA Aren’t Feared Anymore
This World Cup made it abundantly clear to everyone that national teams no longer keel over in fear of the USA anymore. In fact, it seems most national teams are relishing the chance to face the USA and possibly beat them in a competitive contest.
Even though Team USA’s run didn’t end until the semi-finals, they were in hot water at multiple points in the tournament. They almost lost a group stage game to Nikola Vucevic’s Montenegro in what would’ve been a massive upset. Even though the USA pulled through that one, they did lose to three teams in the World Cup.
Funnily, the three teams that Team USA lost to are also the three teams Slovenia lost to. The difference is that Slovenia had only one NBA player on their roster, Luka Doncic, while Team USA had the best squad on paper. Teams like Lithuania, Germany, and Canada proved to be too much for the USA, as they started giving up during the game and failed to match their physicality.
Biggest Threats To The USA At The Olympics
With LeBron James implying he may return for Team USA at the 2024 Olympics, we can expect another stacked roster next year in Paris. Team USA has been vulnerable in FIBA competitions because they send a weak roster, which hasn’t been the case at the Olympics since 2004.
A presumed roster with LeBron, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, along with the other best players in the USA could be in the works. But the competition will be stiffer than ever given the strides international basketball has been taking.
Serbia will be one of the biggest threats, making a World Cup Finals without Nikola Jokic, who’s expected to play next year. France could add both Victor Wembanyama and Joel Embiid to a roster that just had a humiliating first-round exit in the tournament. Greece will be back with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Slovenia will be hoping to get Vlatko Cancar back alongside Luka Doncic next season.
It won’t be an easy run, but the USA will be the prohibitive favorite. It’s their tournament to lose, so the stars should come out and keep their Gold medal streak alive.
