- James Harden’s NBA future looks grim at the moment
Former Houston Rockets coach Kevin McHale ripped into James Harden amid his ongoing trade saga with the Philadelphia 76ers.
McHale, who was fired by the Rockets during the 2015–16 season after a 4–7 start, alleged that Harden had plans for situations that arose. He reportedly added that the guard made a plan to get him fired after Harden was benched in the fourth quarter of Game 6 against the LA Clippers during the 2015 Western Conference semifinals.
According to Heavy Sports:
“The next year he came to camp, he was fat and didn’t feel like playing, and I got fired [11] games into the season. He had a plan.”
As far as McHale’s comments about Harden’s weight go, it’s not the first time. Ahead of the 2020-21 season, ‘The Beard’ reported late to training camp and was visibly out of shape before he demanded to be out of Houston. He was traded to the Brooklyn Nets midseason that year.
McHale’s comments just added to the drama that’s unfolding between the Sixers and Harden. Earlier, the latter called out team president Daryl Morey in China during a press tour, calling him a ‘liar’ after the trade discussions appeared to hit a dead end.
Now, the former Boston Celtics’ star, who spent time coaching Harden from the sidelines, lashed out about the guard’s approach. It surely isn’t a good feeling with all that’s going on for the immensely talented former MVP, and only time will tell how it all pans out.
Is James Harden’s NBA Career Approaching The End?
Soon after his comments, experts and analysts predicted that James Harden’s NBA run is coming to an end.
Earlier, former Celtics star Kendrick Perkins said the guard’s time in the league might be running out of road. Talking on ESPN, he opined:
“You went and criticized a guy, a friend that values you more than anybody in the league. James Harden has everything to lose, and if he’s not careful, he could possibly be out of the league after next year.”
“Because here’s the thing: You can’t trust him. He’s been disgruntled in the last four out of five years. …The NBA doesn’t need him. … They move on from old superstars. They have a bunch of young superstars coming in every single year that can replace him.”
Perkins isn’t entirely wrong. The league isn’t short of star power, and there are fresh faces coming in to make a mark.
At 33, Harden’s championship window is closing soon, and with no team ready to shell out the kind of moolah he’s looking for, chances of the 10-time All-Star looking at a long-term deal looks bleak.
