After signing the richest contract in NBA history, there is no doubt that Jaylen Brown is among the biggest winners of the 2023 offseason. As the proud owner of the richest contract in basketball history, Brown can rest easy knowing his future is secured.

Meanwhile, for the Celtics, while there is excitement that they kept their guy, there is a sense that they may come to regret this move down the road. According to league insider Zach Lowe, opposing teams are already casting doubt on the historic new deal.

“Will it be a good contract, a plus-value contract? Probably not,” said Lowe on his podcast. “Jaylen Brown’s gonna have to grow as a playmaker… it’s his dribbling, passing, and assist-to-turnover ratio which is off the charts. I’ve had a couple people in opposing front offices tell me something along the lines of, ‘Are the Celtics really gonna pay their 3rd or 4th or 5th best player all this money?’”

A $304 million supermax contract is obviously an overpay for Jaylen Brown, who has never had a role as the top dog on his own team. And after a playoff run where his flaws were exposed to a heightened degree, it makes sense why some have criticized the Celtics for handicapping their cap flexibility.

Even so, Boston had little choice. With Jayson Tatum on board and in his prime, they are in full win-now mode, and they could risk letting Jaylen walk for nothing in return. By keeping him around, even at that price, they ensure they are at least competitive for the next few years to come.

Are Celtics The Favorites In The East Next Season?

The Cs nearly made their second straight trip to the Finals this year before losing to the Heat, but they are coming off some pretty massive roster changes that should give them an added edge in their next fight.

With Marcus Smart and Grantr Williams out the door, Boston went bigger and doubled down on shooting by adding Kristaps Porzingis. Naturally, not everyone is sold on that move, either.

“As of now, mid-July, they’re worse,” said NBA insider Chris Mannix. “It really is Kristaps Porzingis for Grant Williams and Marcus Smart. That, to me, is a step back because Marcus Smart, even though he was flawed, you know what he is.”

Only time will tell us how this contract ages for the Celtics, but chances are they’ll still be in a better position than most other teams in the league.
