We have unfortunately heard of so many NBA players growing up without their fathers and how much of a negative impact that had on them at a young age. It is so important to have that figure in one’s life, and the ones who persevere through those hard years to have success deserve a lot of respect.
For former NBA player Tyrell Terry, his parents had separated when he was young, but his father Tyron, a former collegiate college player, still made an effort to be a part of his life. Relations between them deteriorated when Tyrell was in high school, however, and the two haven’t spoken since, as per the New York Times.
“Minor squabbles became major disputes, and at some point when Tyrell was in high school, he and his father stopped talking, and they haven’t spoken since.
“Once, Tyrell offered his father a ticket to a Stanford game after Tyron’s wife, Heidi, had reached out. But they did not speak to each other there, and Tyron wasn’t at his son’s draft night party.
“Nor did he call when Tyrell took leave in Dallas, signed with Memphis or left for Germany.”
That’s a really sad state of affairs and unfortunately, Tyrell’s NBA career would also end up being short-lived.
He had been drafted with the 31st pick by the Dallas Mavericks in 2020 but struggled with mental health issues. In March of his rookie season, Tyrell requested a leave of absence from the team. His situation worsened in the following months and before training camp for the following season, Tyrell told his agent he was done.
The Mavericks agreed to release him, but a few months later, he tried to give his NBA career another shot with the Memphis Grizzlies. He barely played in the 2021-22 season and was let go by the team after that. Just a few months later, in December, he shockingly announced his retirement from professional basketball aged 22, after playing just 13 games in the NBA.
His father read the retirement statement with a great deal of regret and felt perhaps he could have made a difference if he had been there for him. He might well have, but we’ll never know.
Tyrell is fortunately getting better and returned to his college, Stanford, to continue his education. He is planning to pursue a major in science, technology, and society as he enters a new chapter in his life.
