This is a sensitive topic, sports, in particular, have a long history of cultivating environments that are not friendly for people that are queer. That someone like Charles Barkley is so openly supportive of the community is a true example of standing up for your beliefs, no matter who disagrees.
The former NBA superstar has spoken out on this issue many times in the past. There was a time when he questioned the homophobia within the black community, suggesting that he was disappointed with that aspect of the culture. And he has been known to send messages like this via public platforms in the past as well.

It’s not easy to say something that might result in a lot of hate. People of different sexual orientations have often been discriminated against throughout history, and it’s something that continues to this day.
