Young big man Victor Wembanyama has captivated the entire basketball world with his size and skillset on the court. Widely hailed as one of the greatest prospects we’ve ever seen, to say the pressure is on for Wemby to be good right away might be an understatement.

The good news for Victor is that he doesn’t have to face this alone. As he makes his transition to the NBA, he can look to the example set by others who came before him, like Tony Parker, Nic Batum, and Frenchman Rudy Gobert.

“I’ve talked to each of them. The advice that comes up the most is just to stay myself. I know they trust me and everything is gonna go well as long as I stay true to myself.”

Obviously, Wembanyama has the potential to be better than all of those players, but the path will not be easy — as we saw in his Summer League debut. After scoring just 9 points on the night, many fans realized that it may take time for Victor to find his footing in the NBA but he continues to be among the league’s most exciting young prospects.

Will Wemby Live Up To The Hype?

It’s clear that Victor has some amazing potential and nobody should be ready to judge him on one summer league game. Just like with any rookie, it’s going to be a process for Victor and it’ll be important for him not to lose sight of who he is and what he does well.

“It is about expectations. It’s about not skipping steps, which I say often. It’s A to B to C to D in a variety of levels,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. “Because of all the hype, he’ll have a target on his back… so more than Os and Xs to begin with, we’ll be mostly interested in setting a framework and an environment where he’s comfortable, where he can be Victor. He’s not LeBron or Tim or Kobe or anybody else, he’s Victor and that’s who we want him to be.”

We will see soon enough if Wembanyama is ready for the NBA scene, but it’s too early to start worrying about his game now. As long as he’s willing to learn and grow, the stage is set for him to become a truly extraordinary player.
