Williams is getting paid extremely handsomely to pass up on potential opportunities with the Milwaukee Bucks or Toronto Raptors to take over the rebuilding Pistons, who had the worst record in the league last season and saw their draft pick fall to No. 5 instead of getting Victor Wembanyama. They need to make the right moves toward a winning direction and Williams is the perfect coach to help them do that.
Where Do The Pistons Go From Here?
Signing a coach like Monty is a clear statement of intent from the Pistons, as Williams turned the Suns around after they spent a few seasons stuck at the bottom of the NBA. The length of the contract indicates that even Williams knows this is a slow project and results may not come instantly for the franchise.
He has an incredibly talented young core on his hands already with Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Jalen Duren. With the possible draft addition of Cam Whitmore, the Pistons have all the young pieces they need.
