Jimmy Butler had the chance to become a big figure in Boston a couple of years ago, but the team took a different route and drafted a young Jaylen Brown, who already carried big expectations with him.
Back in 2018, K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Tribune revealed that the Celtics pondered the idea of trading the No. 3 overall pick in that year’s NBA Draft. Instead, they kept the pick, brought in Brown and the Bulls kept Jimmy Butler.
“The Bulls held advanced discussions with the Celtics centered on Butler and the No. 3 pick, with whom they would’ve selected Providence guard, Kris Dunn, league sources said. Several proposals were exchanged, including one with Jae Crowder and the Celtics’ No. 3 and No. 16 picks, league sources said.
“But the Celtics have a reputation of trying to win trades and kept changing terms, none of which ultimately met the Bulls’ liking.”
This wasn’t the first time Butler was linked with a move to Chicago, as he was nearly traded for the draft picks that turned out to be Jayson Tatum and Brown, but Danny Ainge decided against that.
In the end, none of this happened, and the Celtics made a good decision, adding Jaylen Brown to the roster. Butler’s tenure in Chicago didn’t end the best way, and he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he starred in one of the most infamous moments of the NBA in recent years.
He then played for the Philadelphia 76ers before joining the Miami Heat in 2019. Butler is now playing in his second NBA Finals after beating the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second time in the last three years.
First, he dominated them in the 2020 Orlando bubble, and this year, he took revenge after the Celtics previously eliminated them one year ago. Butler has made so much of the players he’s had by his side, which shows the type of leader he is and how much he believes in the ballers that surround him.
Jimmy Butler Led The Miami Heat To The 2023 NBA Finals By Eliminating The Celtics
After taking a 3-0 lead and letting the Celtics tie the series and force Game 7, the Heat took care of business and closed the deal on Monday, advancing to the NBA Finals, becoming the second No. 8 seed ever to play in the championship series.
He’ll now face the Denver Nuggets in a very difficult series, but it’s fair to say that the Heat have made history, and regardless of how this series ends, they should be proud of everything they accomplished this campaign.
The Nuggets know the Heat won’t be an easy rival, and they’re ready to face them with everything they have. Butler is on a mission, and even though this challenge seems incredibly hard to overcome, the swingman isn’t afraid.
