The antics of Dillon Brooks have definitely given him a reputation as a villain in the NBA this year, mocking the likes of Draymond Green and LeBron James without having the skill to back it up.
Brooks has been getting embarrassed on the court by LeBron in the last two games and ducked talking to the media after those games. Damian Lillard seemingly took a subtle shot at Brooks with a tweet.
“You can’t be ‘HIM’ one day and in an identity crisis a few days later.”

Brooks was going out of his way to talk trash to LeBron, disrespecting his age and saying he needed LeBron to score 40 before he respected him. After the beatdown he’s received in the last two games, Brooks no longer wants to talk to the media and instigate his opponents. Instead, the Grizzlies wing has been blaming the media for portraying him as a villain.
Sure, not like Dillon hasn’t gone out of his way this season to get people talking about him as a villain. With his inability to back up his trash talk and the Grizzlies about to lose to the 7th seed in 5 games, it seems Brooks’ summer contract negotiations aren’t going to be pretty.
Did Dillon Brooks Sabotage Himself?
When we look at the long tradition of pests in the NBA, they have always had some skill to hang their hat on. Patrick Beverley was never one of the best players in the league, but he could get defensive stops and was an All-Defense player. Dillon Brooks is not nearly as proficient defensively and may be one of the worst offensive players on the Grizzlies’ roster.
With his playoff averages of 11.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on 33.3% shooting through four games, Brooks has actively been holding the team back this series. The optics are worse given how much he’s talked all season and everything he said to LeBron. If you come for the King, you better not miss.
Brooks has been bad enough to seriously impact his payday in the summer unless he leads the Grizzlies to a 3-1 comeback in the series.
