JaVale McGee has been a journeyman in the NBA, and in the eight teams he’s played for throughout his time in the league, he felt the Golden State Warriors treat their players better and believed that they were a better franchise in that aspect.
Speaking to his former teammate Draymond Green on The Draymond Green Show, the center, who now plies his trade for the Dallas Mavericks was all praise for the Warriors.
“Tasting that championship, man,” McGee explained. “Seeing what it took, game one to game 82, to every game in the playoffs, of what it took. The brotherhood that I felt, the energy, and the way the Warriors organization treats their players. I had been to three or four teams, and the Warriors, by far, still to this day, treat their players the best out of anybody.”
He further added that owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber were instrumental as they treated players like family taking them out to dinners on the road — something he said other teams he has seen haven’t done.
“Just that aspect of being able to congregate with not only your teammates but your teammates’ friends and family, and not worrying about the bill,” McGee added. “Just order whatever you want. We’re all just going to congregate in fellowship and really enjoy it. And that was one aspect. And I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to do this again.’ And it worked out.”
McGee played with the Warriors from 2016 to 2018. The three-time NBA champion eventually suited up for the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, followed by a short stint with his former team, the Denver Nuggets. He also played for the Phoenix Suns before his second stint with the Mavericks.

It wasn’t the first time that McGee was grateful for being a part of the Warriors setup and was vocal about his praise for the team. Earlier, he revealed something similar to what he told Green while appearing on Shannon Sharpe’s ‘Club Shay Shay’.
“Going to Golden State was life-changing for me. Seeing the way a real organization works…they were definitely a players ‘team. 1-15 everybody was locked in.” And the proof was in the pudding as McGee won two championships with the Warriors followed by his third with the Lakers.
While his contributions were fairly minimal, he was a vital cog known for his rebounding and rim protection. In his two seasons with the Warriors, he averaged 5.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 0.4 assists — but he did have a tremendous time by his own admission.
