As the Memphis Grizzlies free-fall down the Western Conference standings, head coach Taylor Jenkins shed some light on when we can expect their star, Ja Morant, to finally return to the court.
Speaking to the media ahead of tonight’s matchup against the Warriors, Jenkins described the process for Ja’s return and reiterated that it will be at least a few more games before he’s back in the lineup.
“I can’t share the details. There’s definitely steps that are going to need to be met personally and professionally as he deals with some stuff to get better,” said Jenkins. “Then obviously the expectation of the team, he’s going to have some things that he’s going to have to clear to know what the expectations are when he does return. Again, he’s out at least the next four games. I know everyone wants to know what’s this going to be. It’s the hot topic for sure, but he’s taking time. His responsibility to get better personally — that’s a big factor in this. And also, his responsibility to the team is something we’re addressing with him. He’s fully on board and has been communicative with our group.”

This situation is similar to what happened between Kyrie Irving and the Nets earlier this season. After he promoted anti-Semitic material on his platform, Irving was given a list of conditions to meet before he could return to action for the Nets.
Of course, Ja’s case has much bigger implications. With reports claiming Morant was threatening people with guns and training laser pointers on fellow players, the Instagram Live video was the final straw that prompted both the NBA and law enforcement to begin a thorough investigation.
For now, Morant has avoided any serious consequences, but any further mistakes like this could seriously jeopardize his career.
How Far Can Grizzlies Go This Season?
At one point, Memphis looked like the best team in the West with Ja, Desmond Bane, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Steven Adams. But amid various injuries and this latest incident with Morant (which has become a huge distraction for the team), doubt is being cast on the Grizzlies and their chances to come out of the West.
Either way, Memphis has no plans to rush the process and will wait however long is needed for Morant to sort out his issues.
The reality is the Grizzlies organization has to focus on more than just this season. They have to protect their star and ensure he can be successful for years to come.
