When it comes to drafting potential star talent, there aren’t many franchises in the NBA that can match the level of the Golden State Warriors. The Dubs initially proved that by drafting Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. It resulted in the Warriors winning four NBA Championships over the last eight seasons.

But considering the Big 3 of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green is already on its last legs, the Dubs need to develop young stars. One such player who was expected to take that mantle from the original trio was James Wiseman.

Wiseman was once touted as a center with full potential, and the Warriors took a bet on him. But that hasn’t been the case, and many now believe the franchise will end up trading away its young star.

James Wiseman’s Trade Could Help The Warriors In Saving $131 Million

Since the rise of the team’s original Big 3 and the addition of the likes of Jordan Poole, Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman, and Jonathan Kuminga, the Warriors are paying a hefty amount in salaries and luxury tax.

But that doesn’t mean the Dubs do not want to reduce on that, and John Hollinger of ‘The Athletic’ recently mentioned how trading James Wiseman could help the team in saving $131 million.

Via The Athletic:

Golden State has the league’s second-biggest payroll, stands at 28-26 and is without Stephen Curry for the next few weeks at least. The Warriors will write a $130 million check to the league for this roster as things currently stand, and they also face a staggering luxury-tax bill next season if they keep the roster together. Even if Draymond Green declines his player option and departs in free agency, this will be an impressively expensive team.

As a result, even small bits of window dressing could save eye-popping amounts of money after accounting for the tax penalty and the Warriors’ repeater status. That, in turn, focuses attention on James Wiseman. He’s owed $9.6 million this year and $12.2 million next year, meaning that San Antonio, Detroit, Utah or Indiana could trade for him without sending anything back. Such a transaction would save the Warriors about $51 million in salary and tax this year and an estimated $85 million in salary and tax next year; a total of $131 million in savings to dump a guy who rarely plays.

As Hollinger mentioned in his article, the Warriors are dealing with the absence of Stephen Curry over the next few weeks, and they may need to make a few trades to fill in the gap left by Curry.

The Warriors will most likely move James Wiseman in any given trade package, and it will certainly help them in both – improving the roster and saving a lot of money in taxes.
