When Mark Cuban became the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, the fortunes of the franchise changed for the better. Sure, having Dirk Nowitzki around is a big help, but under Cuban, the Mavs, who had struggled for much of their existence in the NBA, turned into a heavyweight in the Western Conference.
Cuban once revealed how he made the money to buy the team, as he stated that he sold a company he started with $8,000 for $5.7 billion. That was a brilliant piece of business right there, and it explains why he is so successful today. Cuban was also asked about what is the best advice he would give his younger self, and here’s what he had to say.
“Same thing I did, be a salesperson. Sell and learn all you can about business. Once you know how to sell, you can always start a business. Selling isn’t about convincing, it’s about helping. So when you understand what people need and what they want, and then put yourself in a position to help them, then you can make good things happen and you close deals and that’s how you create companies.”
That is some great advice right there, and he sure did a great job of selling that company in order to get the funds to buy the Mavericks. While the team has risen from the bottom under Cuban, he definitely isn’t a very popular figure among Mavericks fans at the moment. They are unhappy that he hasn’t surrounded Luka Doncic with more talent and have voiced their frustrations with him.
Patrick Beverley Says NBA Players Love Mark Cuban And The Mavericks
While his relationship with the fans may have soured, Cuban remains a very popular figure among NBA players, as per Patrick Beverley. Beverley stated that Cuban is always transparent with players, which is greatly appreciated. He also stated that players love the Mavericks, but none of the big names have headed over there.
Cuban will need to get some big star to join the Mavericks in the coming years, as they are not going to be a real title threat with the current roster. Colin Cowherd urged LeBron James to head to Dallas, as he thinks James will be a perfect fit alongside Luka. That would be quite a move, but it is doubtful if they will be able to pull it off, as the Los Angeles Lakers would be looking for a big haul in return if they do trade the King.
