Rudy Gobert has been subject to criticism for a while now. The Frenchman is now trying to do what he couldn’t in Utah and lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to compete for important things in the NBA.

The 2022-23 NBA season didn’t have the best start for Gobert and his team, as they struggled to find their rhythm, and even Anthony Edwards had something to say about the team’s performance during the first weeks of competition.

A lot was said about him in Utah, and now he’s carrying that perception to Minny. Plenty of people have criticized him, and Gobert is ready to prove them wrong. After many years trying to win with the Jazz without success, he knows haters will have something to say no matter what he does.

Rudy Gobert Knows He Has To Impress Executives, Not Fans

His trade to Minnesota was a big shock for everybody, and given the results the association between Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns initially had, many fans criticized this trade. Talking with Tania Ganguli of The New York Times, Rudy fired back at those who don’t think he’s as good as many people think.

“The average fan might not understand what I bring to the table,” Gobert said, “but the G.M.s in the league do.”

He also touched on how people get happy whenever he fails, explaining that once he started having success in the league, people started talking bad things about him.

When did you first feel that people were celebrating your failures?

Once I started to have success, when I started winning defensive player of the year, All-N.B.A., being an All-Star. When my team, when we started winning like 50 games and stuff. The people on social media are always the loudest. When I go outside, it’s usually all the interactions are positive.

Social media is a different place, and the people that have a lot of frustration can put it out there. The fans are going to have opinions. I’m more talking about the media.

Rudy is now trying to change the narrative and get some wins in Minnesota. They are still struggling to get things going, ranking 11th in the Western Conference standings. The experiment of Rudy and Towns hasn’t worked as expected, and so many already consider it one of the worst in recent years.

His association with Donovan Mitchell was never meant to win a championship, but it surely was better than what these Timberwolves are showing this season.
