When it comes to basketball in the city of Milwaukee, Giannis Antetokounmpo has the keys to the castle. As a 2x MVP and one of the most dominant players on the planet, Giannis has already led the Bucks to one championship, and he could be well on his way to securing another.
But, in an appearance on NBA Today, ESPN analyst Zach Lowe talked about a different Bucks player for All-Star consideration: Brook Lopez.
“How about Brook Lopez? He might be the front-runner for defensive player of the year, I think everybody knows that by now. What people might not know is that he’s averaging more points and more minutes than in any season since he played for the Brooklyn Nets, which feels like a million years ago. He’s shooting 40% from three, 59% from two, he spaces the floor for Giannis, he’ll bulldoze you in the post if you put a small guy on him. I’m saying it right now. Given the time [Khris] Middleton has missed and [Jrue] Holiday has missed and the Bucks have the best record in the league. He has a real All-Star case… Brook Lopez belongs in the All-Star conversation.”
What Moves Could The Bucks Make This Trade Season?
The Bucks are good enough to win the title just as they are, especially with Brook Lopez averaging 14.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game on 39.2% shooting.
Still, the Bucks could make some changes to fill some of the weaker aspects of their roster. Potential trade candidates include Serge Ibaka, George Hill, and Grayson Allen.
The big question, though, is if the Bucks are willing to part with Grayson Allen. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the team was indeed considering trading the forward for Crowder or a bunch of names that include the above-mentioned duo of Ibaka and Hill.
Allen signed a two-year $18 million contract and has been playing well for the unit. He averages 10.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists this season. His $8.5 million this year is one of the closest that comes to matching Crowder’s salary, making him one of the obvious choices to be traded.
On paper, Brook Lopez isn’t a name that will jump out right away, especially with the modest numbers he’s putting up right now.
But he’s doing exactly what he needs to do for this time, and his perfection in the role has led to amazing results for both his own game and the play of the team.
If Lopez is able to keep up this performance, and the other Bucks stars continue to miss time, don’t be surprised to see him be the one who accompanies Giannis to All-Star weekend.
