No duo has much more beef with one another than NBA stars and the referees. Stars can never agree on just about any call that goes against them, and for their part, the referees can mess it up quite a lot on occasion as well. There is a lot of discussion around the standard of NBA refereeing this season and what could potentially change, but so far, it’s been a bit inconsistent.

There are often calls that simply cannot be explained away, like the one which saw Luka Doncic pick up a technical foul for yelling at his teammate. This is quite absurd, and it makes it easier to understand why stars are feeling as frustrated as they are. And after some calls went against them in their unexpected second loss in a row against the Clippers, Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics addressed the situation.

Jaylen Brown Got Real About Complaining To The Referees

Antagonizing the referees never helps, it makes them less likely to look upon a player’s pleas favorably. Spencer Dinwiddie called out Tony Brothers for using inappropriate language directed at him, and the whole situation was a really ugly one. And Brown knows that complaining about the situation is simply not a profitable option, he said as much during his interview after the Celtics lost to the Clippers.

“Going into this year, I made an emphasis for me that I’m not about to complain to the refs. I’m not about to change nothing. If I see something that I think can be something for them to look out for, then I’ll let them know. But I don’t do too much complaining to the officials and the referees and I gotta be better on picking and choosing when I can be aggressive.”

This is a smart take from Jaylen Brown, knowing when to pick a fight is an important skill for players to have when they are dealing with the refs. It’s hard not to get carried away in the heat of the moment, but not complaining about calls is the way to go.

This isn’t entirely straightforward, though. By even saying this much, Brown has implied that there are problems with the refereeing. Being a ref is one of the hardest jobs in the world, and while it is important to acknowledge that they are also only human, the NBA needs to work on finding some consistency in this regard.
