Jonathan Kuminga showed a lot of promise in his rookie season in the NBA and gave hope to the Golden State Warriors and their fans that they might have landed the next cornerstone piece for the franchise. He seemed to be suffering a sophomore slump earlier this season, however, and there were multiple games where the Warriors didn’t play him at all.
Things have changed quite a bit now, though, as Kuminga has shown significant improvement in his play. He had one of the best games of his career against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, as he finished with 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists while shooting 10-13 from the field. Former player and current Warriors analyst Dorell Wright was very impressed with Kuminga’s performance and compared him to Kawhi Leonard.

“This guy is finally starting to get it. He can do a lot of gifted things on the offensive side but now he is slowing the game down a little bit, he’s not rushing… We talked about his defense, he can be another Kawhi Leonard in my opinion. Do it on both ends of the floor right here, staying with one of the best players in the league when it comes to scoring the basketball, finishing with the block, finishing with the rebound, and getting a bit scrappy out there with Jordan Clarkson. He ain’t gonna back down from nobody. I love JK, man. He’s going to be a big time player in this league.”
Things definitely did get heated with Jordan Clarkson at the end there! If Kuminga ends up being anywhere close to as good as Kawhi, then the Warriors would be thrilled. He certainly has the potential to be special, but we aren’t sure he has what it takes to be a superstar in this league. If there is one aspect of Leonard that the Warriors certainly don’t want Kuminga to have, it is the injury issues, which continue to plague the two-time Finals MVP.
Stephen A. Smith Has No Faith In Kawhi Leonard
Kawhi played just his 8th game of the season tonight in the Clippers’ win over the Wizards. He had a slow recovery from his ACL tear in 2021 and has dealt with ankle issues this season as well.
Stephen A. Smith said that the Clippers are probably the favorites to win the Western Conference if Kawhi and Paul George are healthy, but he has no faith in Leonard’s health. That is fair to say at this point, as you can’t really rely on him staying upright. The Clippers are trying to be as cautious as they can be, but it probably won’t be enough if the past is any indicator.
