Ahead of Game 6 of the NBA Finals, Marcus Smart spoke to the media about all kinds of different subjects. Among the topics of conversation? His green hair, which sticks out to anyone who has watched a Celtics game recently.
As he explained to The Sporting News, it has to do with his mother, who passed away a few years ago after an intense battle with cancer.

This whole situation is new for Smart. Despite the long and rich history of the Celtics, this is the first time since 2010 that they are in the Finals and the first time Marcus Smart has been this close to a title.
True, his Celtics are on the brink of elimination, but they have played well so far and there is no doubt that Smart, and his connection to Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, has something to do with the C’s success.
“My mom passed; they flew all the way to Dallas to the funeral. That was for real. It wasn’t no tactic. It was nothing. That was me being who I am, and that was true. We have a special bond outside of basketball, and you know, to be able to go to war with those guys makes that bond even stronger,” Smart said.
“Whatever I can do to help my teammates, I’m going to do it. If that’s talking to them, sitting down; if that’s chewing them out or getting on them for something that they know we all know they should or shouldn’t do, and vice versa with me. I think that’s what makes our bond special”.
It’s unfortunate that Camellia Smart never got to see her son at this stage, but her life and legacy live on in Marcus, who is keeping her at the front of his mind as he battles the Warriors.
His green hair, besides showing support for his team, is just a reminder of how much he really cares about his family.
