Andrew Wiggins has been a stellar two-way player for the Golden State Warriors this season. He is currently averaging 18.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 2.0 APG this season while shooting 41.3% from beyond the arc and playing some stellar perimeter defense on opposing stars.
While there is no doubt that Andrew Wiggins is definitely performing well this season, there were a lot of trade rumors surrounding him over the offseason. In particular, there were reports that suggested Wiggins could be traded for 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons.
Former Warriors player Dorell Wright has recently stated that he wouldn’t give up Andrew Wiggins in a Ben Simmons trade claiming that decision “would be a big mistake”. Wright did say he was open to the possibility of acquiring Simmons without giving up Wiggins or the Warriors’ other core players, though that is probably impossible. Grant Liffmann of NBC Sports relayed the news.
“I think with this team right now is perfect,” Wright said on the latest episode of the Dubs Talk podcast. “For Ben Simmons, of course you call and just see what is going on, because he is a big-time player, former number one pick, and we know all the things he brings to the game. So you definitely want to know exactly what they are looking for.”
“But I really, really like this team, because I think you would have to give up too much for Ben Simmons,” Wright said.
“I’m not trading Wiggins. That would be a big mistake getting rid of Wiggins,” Wright declared.
“Now, if you are not talking about messing up anything with the core guys, and when I say core, I mean Klay, Steph, Draymond and Wiggins. If you do not have to touch those four, then maybe we can talk a little bit more about making that happen. If it is going to mess up those core guys, I would not even think about doing it. It is all about winning right now. These guys are getting older and older in their career, and I am pretty sure they want to win more championships, not just one, but maybe a few more. So if you can keep those four guys, then maybe I will take a look at it.”
The trade deadline is coming up, and thus far, there is no indication that an Andrew Wiggins/Ben Simmons swap is on the horizon. The Warriors don’t necessarily need a trade either, as they are already a contender without Simmons.
Andrew Wiggins has thrived with the Golden State Warriors, and there’s no reason to trade him unless it’s for a top-tier positional upgrade. Hopefully, we see him continue playing at the level that got him All-Star consideration, and perhaps we will end up watching Wiggins get his first All-Star selection this year.
