Big man Anthony Davis is one of the top two-way players in the league when on the court for the Los Angeles Lakers. There is no doubt that he has a huge impact, but only when he is healthy.

There were some previous reports that suggested the Los Angeles Lakers are reluctant to give Anthony Davis an extension this offseason. However, it seems as though the team’s stance has changed. When speaking about the situation, Lakers insider Dave McMenamin revealed that he expects some sort of agreement to be reached by the player and the team.

“But where things stand right now, I expect some sort of an agreement to be reached. A lot of it is one, recognizing that Anthony Davis as a trade chip, there’s no way to replicate the value of what he brings to the court combined with LeBron James when he’s healthy, you just won’t. It’s absolutely impossible.

“You also recognize that LeBron turning 39 years old and entering Year 21 has a limited window, so then to try to coalesce with a new group if you were to find this beautiful trade for Anthony Davis, that’s folly, you could be wasting what’s left of LeBron and then beyond that, listen, we know the business of this league. If there’s no extension offered, what do you do? You apply pressure the other way and say I want out. So I’m fairly confident that Anthony Davis will come into training camp with an extended deal.” (37:50)

There is no doubt that this is good news for the Los Angeles Lakers, as Anthony Davis is crucial to their contending hopes. We will see what the final contract looks like, but it is clear that the team’s priority is to keep the big man.

In the 2022-23 regular season with the Los Angeles Lakers, Anthony Davis averaged 25.9 PPG, 12.5 RPG, and 2.6 APG. The key for him is to be a superstar consistently, and hopefully, he has a good year next season.

It Is Up To Anthony Davis To Lead The Lakers To The Title Next Season

At this point, LeBron James is in the latter stages of his career, and it shouldn’t be up to him to lead the Lakers to a championship. Ultimately as NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins said, it will be up to Anthony Davis.

“I don’t,” KP replied when asked if he thinks James can lead the team to a title in the 2023-24 season. “I don’t. And not because I don’t believe in LeBron James. Look, I think he’s the greatest player of all time. We can debate that another day. I’m standing on that, 10 toes down. But when it comes down to putting expectations on a guy that’s going to be 39 years old in December, I just can’t do that. Especially when he’s playing alongside a guy that is in his prime – a top-five talent – in Anthony Davis. This shouldn’t be on LeBron James.”

Hopefully, we see Anthony Davis step up for the Los Angeles Lakers, and show the world that he can be the No. 1 option on a championship team. He is a truly talented player, and he needs to embrace carrying the team on his back.
