The 2023 NBA Finals are currently tied up 1-1 between the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat. Bam Adebayo has been the Heat’s leading scorer so far and their primary defensive option on the court.

Adebayo spoke to The Athletic and was asked about the pressure of guarding Nikola Jokic in the NBA Finals, to which Adebayo responded by showing he has faced much larger pressures in life.

“Maaaaaan,” Adebayo said, looking up after drying off his feet. “I lived off $12,000 a year, me and my mom. It don’t get weightier than that. This is fun.”

Adebayo is averaging 23.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in the two games he’s played in the Finals so far. The burden of responsibility is definitely immense with regard to the Heat’s title chances, but playing a sport with millions of dollars in the bank isn’t the same pressure as someone trying to figure out where their next meal will be coming from.

Bam Adebayo Making A Push For Finals MVP

If the Heat are to win the Finals, through the first two games, it seems like Adebayo would be the one to lift the Bill Russell Finals MVP award in the first Finals after the legend’s passing this season. It’s fitting that a defense-first center is in the running for the award given Russell’s play style during his time in the league.

Both teams have three more games to win before they can celebrate a title, so a lot can change. Jimmy Butler has had a slow start that could turn around for the remaining five games while Adebayo has average performances to switch where this award is headed. The Nuggets could win and Jokic could take it with him. A lot is left to be played for and it seems neither team will let the pressure get to them.
