Kyrie Irving’s tenure with the Brooklyn Nets was filled with a lot of drama, this is an undeniable fact. A lot of it was thanks to him, the situation with the Covid-19 vaccine and then the link to an anti-semitic video were both big distractions for the team. But the Nets had more significant problems than just Irving, their entire Big 3 experiment failed quite spectacularly.
Ben Simmons is the one borderline star still on the Brooklyn Nets, but he has been a shell of the player he once was. Simmons’ offensive game has completely fallen off, and it seems that even Kevin Durant was less than impressed with him this season. But Ben has spoken about needing time to get back to his best and the media scrutiny has certainly been alleviated for the Nets, something he addressed while seemingly throwing shade at Irving (via Newsday).
“We got a great group of guys, guys who just want to play basketball…..I’m kind of tired of just, you know, any focus being away from basketball.”
This is a dig at Kyrie Irving, who was always in the headlines for one reason or another. And if there were those wondering if he was also taking a Kevin Durant, his following quote made it apparent that Ben Simmons has more of an issue with his other former co-star.
Ben Simmons Wished Kevin Durant The Best But Didn’t Mention Kyrie Irving
The Brooklyn Nets traded away Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving for a veritable haul of picks but also got some premium role players in return as well. The Nets look like they’ll play with energy and verve moving forward, and Ben Simmons seems to be happy about it. He wished Durant well but had no such words for Kyrie.
“Obviously, I’ve had a crazy year-and-a-half so I kind of just want to play basketball and get back to feeling like myself. So it’s good. I wish KD well. He’s a tremendous basketball player. I have a lot of respect for him… But I’m happy with the guys we’ve got here.”
Ben Simmons needs to up his game once more if he wants to be seen as a positive in the NBA once again. He is reportedly no longer seen as a valuable player by teams around the NBA and this no-pressure situation with the Nets is his time to change that. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant sure look like they’re set up for success in their respective new situations.
