When Russell Westbrook and James Harden reunited in Houston last summer, there was a lot of optimism that the partnership would bring about major success for the franchise. But, following a roller-coaster season with many ups and downs, the roster changes didn’t bear as much fruit as the team had hoped.
Facing major questions about where to go from here, the Rockets are in an interesting position as they determine how to make the most of their situation.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim MacMahon, team executives are worried faith from their stars are wavering.
In the wake of the departures of head coach Mike D’Antoni and general manager Daryl Morey, Harden and Westbrook have expressed concern about the direction of the franchise through direct conversations or discussions with their representatives and the Rockets’ front office, sources said.
Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, recently promoted general manager Rafael Stone and recently hired head coach Stephen Silas have emphasized that the franchise remains committed to fielding a contender while featuring the two perennial All-Stars in their primes. However, the concerns expressed by Harden and Westbrook that Houston’s window as a contender could be closing has left the organization fearful that the superstars’ commitment to remaining with the Rockets could be wavering.
At the very least, No. 0 has already clocked out, seemingly informing the team he wants a trade.

Even with all the flaws, the Harden/Westbrook duo is considered one of the best in the league. Combining for an average of 61.7 points per game, Harden and Westbrook became the top-scoring pair in the history of the NBA back in August. They have both publicly expressed respect and admiration for each other.
Since the arrival of Westbrook, the Rockets have endured many changes. In February, they traded away their franchise center, showing an unprecedented commitment to small-ball. Months later, after they were eliminated in the playoffs, they welcomed new head coach, Stephen Silas, and saw their long-time GM Daryl Morey pack his bags for a stint in Philly.
With the draft and free agency quickly approaching, nobody knows what other changes may be in store for the franchise.
But if they don’t start winning soon, a complete rebuild may be in the cards for H-Town.
