Charles Barkley is one of the greatest players to have stepped onto the court and continues to entertain millions with his analysis. His playing career wasn’t without its issues.
The former Phoenix Suns superstar was sensational on the court but was known to be a hothead. In 1991, he spat at a heckler and hit a young fan, causing him to be suspended. He opened up on that incident and said it was fueled by his anger at his high-school Spanish teacher and his father.
“Barkley said his play had been fueled by anger at his dad, who left the family when Barkley was a year old, and Ms. Gomez, a Spanish teacher who’d flunked him, which prevented him from graduating with the rest of his high school class. “I am only gonna play basketball ’cause I’m great at it and I love to play. I’m getting all the dirt off my shoulders. Ms. Gomez, bye! Dad, bye!” (h/t CBS News)
Sir Charles Barkley once said this about his relationship with his father on ‘The Steam Room’ with Ernie Johnson.
“And last and definitely not least, my dad passed away Christmas week. And I and my dad have had a complicated relationship. I want to make it perfectly clear, for the last long years of our life, we have had a great relationship. We had a rocky relationship the first probably 20, 30 years of my life.”
Chuck played for the Philadelphia 76ers at the time and truly unlocked a new version of himself later in his career. Channeling his anger at his demons on the court ended up being massively beneficial for Barkley, who would eventually rise to become an NBA MVP.
