In the realm of basketball legends, Allen Iverson is one such name that transcends the boundaries of the court and becomes a cultural icon. As he reaches the Hall of Fame, Wade said he found a source of inspiration and guidance in Iverson after the retirement of Michael Jordan.

As a young and aspiring player in the NBA, Dwyane Wade witnessed the exit of one basketball deity, only to turn to another for inspiration. In an interview with Sopan Deb of the New York Times, Wade revealed that after Michael Jordan’s retirement, he found solace and motivation in the unapologetic and fearless playing style of Allen Iverson:

“Michael Jordan was my favorite player. But as I was growing up as a kid, as Michael Jordan decided to retire from the game, Allen Iverson became the hero of our culture. I think a lot of people know I wear No. 3, but a lot of people don’t know why I wear No. 3.”

“And so I just wanted to take this moment as an opportunity that is supposed to be about me, and I wanted to be able to shine light and give flowers to individuals that allow me and help me get here. My family, of course. My coaches, of course. My teammates, of course.”

“But what about those individuals that gave you the image of what it looks like and how it can be done? And Allen Iverson gave me the image of how it looks like, how it could be done coming from the broken community that I came from. So I want to give him his flowers in front of the world because he deserves it.”

Wade’s decision to look up to Iverson after Jordan’s retirement was a testament to the latter’s enduring influence. Iverson’s journey, from his humble beginnings to becoming a force to be reckoned with on and off the court, struck a chord with many players, including Wade.

Allen Iverson Honors Dwyane Wade With Suit

In a touching display of camaraderie and mutual admiration, Allen Iverson, an NBA legend in his own right, paid a heartfelt tribute to fellow basketball icon Dwyane Wade during Wade’s induction into the prestigious Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Iverson’s choice of attire for the occasion carried a profound message that underscored the depth of their relationship and their shared impact on the sport. Sporting a suit with Wade’s last name and the iconic No. 3 prominently displayed, Iverson’s gesture held more significance than mere sartorial choice.

During the Hall of Fame ceremony, Wade expressed his gratitude and reverence for Iverson’s influence on his career. He highlighted Iverson’s unapologetic playing style, his fearless approach to the game, and his broader impact on basketball culture. Wade also chose Iverson as the person who would be presenting him at the Hall of Fame.

By adorning his suit with Wade’s name and number, Iverson paid homage to the torchbearer of the No. 3 legacy, while also celebrating the significance of their connection.
