The NBA is seemingly in its golden age as the league continues to grow and more money comes into it. New teams are reportedly on the horizon, with Las Vegas rumored to be one of the cities that will get a team. LeBron James has already spoken about wanting to own a team in Vegas, and now another high-profile athlete has seemingly thrown their hat into the ring.

Owning an NBA team is a very lucrative prospect and an expensive one too, as the value of the teams and the league is constantly growing. So it’s no surprise that Floyd Mayweather, the boxing legend, who reportedly made over a billion in career earnings, wants to buy a team. He said as much as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

“I’ve been talking to certain individuals for the last six months,” Mayweather said Monday at the M Resort Spa Casino after announcing an exhibition bout against Japanese mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura. “That’s something I’ve been working on behind the scenes, but I’ve never came out and publicly talked about that with the media.

“Me and my team have been working behind the scenes with the NBA. I can’t say exactly where, but I’m working on getting a team.”

Mayweather is a Las Vegas resident, and with so much talk about Vegas being one of the sites for a potential expansion team, it makes sense that he’s thinking about it. He will compete with LeBron James if that is the one he does want, as Bron has already spoken about wanting to own a team in that city.

While there is no concrete information on a new team just yet, it would not be surprising if it happens soon either. Commissioner Adam Silver is arguably the best commissioner in all of America, and his quest to take the NBA to even greater heights will continue throughout the coming decade.
