After spending the first four seasons of his career with the Boston Celtics, Grant Williams headed to the Dallas Mavericks this offseason. In those four years in Boston, he built great relationships with a lot of his teammates, including Jayson Tatum

They had a lot of fun going at each other, whether it was Williams taunting Tatum after Duke lost or when the Celtics superstar talked trash to him pre-game when he was mic’d up. With Williams on his way out, the two engaged in another hilarious back-and-forth when they met for dinner at some point last week.

“I’m gonna bust your ass when we play Dallas,” Tatum told Grant at dinner last week. “You think?” Williams said. “You can’t go left. And I’m gonna be physical with you and you’ll go cry to the referees.”

Making Tatum go left is something Williams mentioned during that pregame segment, too, and that’s probably going to be his tactic when they do face off.

Losing Williams is going to be a blow for the Celtics. He averaged 8.1 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.7 APG, 0.5 SPG, and 0.4 BPG for them last season while playing good defense. The Celtics ideally would have liked to keep him, but they weren’t really in a position to give him an offer to his liking.

He ended up getting a four-year, $53 million deal from the Mavericks in that sign-and-trade and will bring his toughness and defense to a team that desperately needs it.

Grant Williams Thinks The Celtics Will Have Success Despite Him And Marcus Smart Departing

After failing once again in their quest to win a championship, the Celtics decided they had to make a splash. They did it by acquiring Kristaps Porzingis in a trade but had to part with Marcus Smart to land him.

While Smart and Williams weren’t anywhere close to being the best player on the team, they brought some toughness as well as some tenacity on defense. That isn’t easily replaceable, but Williams thinks the Celtics will be just fine.

He believes they still have a lot of good defenders and added it is time for Tatum and Jaylen Brown to step up and show that dog in them that they’ve always had.
