Ja Morant’s season has been nothing short of a roller-coaster. He was flying high along with the rest of the Grizzlies early in the season, but they have now been ousted in the first round of the playoffs.

When the Memphis Grizzlies were doing great and Ja Morant wasn’t dealing with issues off the court, he made his famous ‘I’m fine in the West’ comment. That already came back to haunt him before, and after the Game 6 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, he was asked about it again.

The interviewer asked, “Ja, you know the ‘I’m fine in the West’ comment is going to be thrown back in the face at this point.” Morant had a cool response, saying, “Yeah, I don’t mind. I don’t care. I said. I deal with it, so.”

Dillon Brooks has been catching a lot of criticism for talking a lot and being unable to back it up but even Ja Morant is in the same boat. The fact that he is talking to the media and taking his lumps is what sets him apart though, that’s something Brooks hasn’t done. Ultimately, Morant has a long career and enough talent for this to eventually not matter, and his owning up to it and moving past it is the perfect way to deal with it.

Ja Morant Had A Poor Series Against The Los Angeles Lakers

Ja Morant was playing with an injury and even missed a game in the series, but even with that considered, it was a poor showing from him. He has been dealing with a lot off the court and even spoken about not being fully there, but it was still disappointing to see him be unable to produce consistent performances when it mattered the most.

Ja scored 45 points in Game 3 and 31 points in Game 5, but the other three games he played in resulted in a combined 47 points. In the all-important Game 6, Morant had just 10 points on horrific 3-16 shooting from the field. These numbers are far from fitting for a superstar and he has a lot to figure out during the offseason.

Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies in general need to be talking a lot less next season. They have the pieces and the talent to be a real force in the NBA, but the extra-curricular behavior outside the game is hampering them. This should be a good lesson learned for a young and exciting team.
