The Dallas Mavericks were officially eliminated from playoff contention after losing against the Chicago Bulls on Friday night. And even though they did try getting into the playoffs, a lot of their better players including Irving didn’t play against the Bulls. Luka Doncic also just played the one quarter. After the game, Head Coach Jason Kidd implied that Mark Cuban wanted the team to lose the game.

“Just understanding it’s not so much waving a white flag, it’s you know, decisions sometimes are hard in this business,” Jason Kidd said when talking about the Mavericks resting a lot of players. “And you have to make hard decisions. We’re trying to build a championship team. And sometimes you gotta step back and understand again, this is maybe a step back.

“It’s not always easy to make decisions, but these are decisions that are made by my bosses, and we have to follow them. And we trust Cuban and Nico are going to put the pieces together to put us in a position to win a championship. And that process started today.”

It would seem like the decision to not play Kyrie Irving, Christian Wood, Tim Hardaway Jr., and to play Luka Doncic only 1 quarter was made by the front office. Mark Cuban is an involved owner, and he had a hand in taking the call as well. There are some benefits to this situation for the Mavericks, but fans are surely not happy about this right now.

The Dallas Mavericks Could Now Get A Top Pick In The 2023 NBA Draft

By losing to the Chicago Bulls, the Dallas Mavericks ensured they have the 9th worst record in the league. They will still need to lose to San Antonio, but the team has given themselves a good chance to grab a top lottery pick in a stacked 2023 NBA draft. Getting a Top 10 pick if they’re not making the playoffs was a must for the Mavericks, as their pick would convey to the Knicks if it is outside the Top 10.

Luka Doncic didn’t have a great end to the season, and he is surely not thrilled about missing the playoffs. The Dallas Mavericks have hinted at major moves in the summer, and they will need to do that to keep Luka happy. It’s a very bad time to be a fan of the Mavericks, but they have the superstar if they can just build around him well moving forward.
