It is hard to see anyone ever eclipsing Dwyane Wade as the greatest player in Miami Heat history, but Jimmy Butler might come close by the time he’s done playing. In his fourth season with the Heat, Butler has led the franchise to its second NBA Finals in the period and he has his eyes set on winning his first championship.

Wade and Butler have formed a special bond over the years as well and in the lead-up to Game 3 of the NBA Finals, Butler said the best advice he had received for playing on the big stage came from Wade.

“It’s always D-Wade just telling me to be myself and be who I am,” Butler said. “Create my own story and go out there and compete and do what you love to do. He’s been in my corner for a very long time now, I’m very grateful. He is a huge reason why I am here. I don’t like to be compared to that guy but the one thing that I do want to be like him is a champion.”

(starts at 9:18 mark):

It was Wade who had told Butler he’d be a perfect fit with the Heat and it really is a match made in heaven. Jimmy is just the perfect leader for the team and he has led them on one of the most improbable Finals runs ever. They have also now stolen home-court advantage in the Finals by winning Game 2 against the Nuggets in Denver and just need to win three home games to become champions.

Jimmy Butler Stated It Is A Curse And A Blessing To Be Compared To Dwyane Wade

Butler’s exploits with the Heat over the years have led to him being compared with Wade quite often, but as he said here, he isn’t too fond of it. He stated earlier this year, too that being compared to a Hall of Famer like Wade is great, but the fact that it happens every step of the way isn’t ideal.

Unfortunately for Butler, the comparisons aren’t going away anytime soon and they’ll come with even greater regularity if he does lead the Heat to their fourth NBA championship. This latest postseason run has just added another chapter to his legend in Miami, as he has put up impressive averages of 27.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 5.9 APG, and 1.9 SPG so far.
